Old Wives Tale #4 The red cabbage Gender Test

Baby Gender Test Accuracy 60%

the old wives tale goes. . .

You can predict the gender of your baby dependant on the color a cup of 1 part morning urine and 1 part boiled red cabbage water turns.

If the mixture stays the same, which is a purple color or turns hues of blue it’s a girl. If it turns to shades of pink or red, then you are having a boy.

To perform the red cabbage gender test prediction:
  1. Chop half a red cabbage into large chunks.
  2. Add the chopped red cabbage to a pan of water and bring to the boil.
  3. Once boiling, boil for 10 minutes then remove from the heat.
  4. Allow it to cool down and collect the red cabbage infused water.
  5. Finally using a glass container, add 1 part red cabbage water, to 1 part morning urine.

The color of the resultant mixture is your gender prediction. Purple/Blue = Girl, Pinks/Reds = Boy.

This whole process is all to do with those high school chemistry experiments we all did using litmus paper and the pH scale. Any color change will happen according to the pH level of the urine. Red cabbage juice has a neutral pH, this means it will change color according to the acidity of the solution added to it.

It will go purples and blues if the urine is more alkaline (girl) and reds and pinks if the urine is more acidic (boy).

Now, red cabbage juice/water is an indicator to the acidity to a solution added to it. However, the acidity of your urine, which may affect the color of the cabbage water, isn’t necessarily an indicator to gender. Many things can affect the pH of your pee.

What affects the pH of your wee? Things such diet, exercise, hydration and many other factors affect the pH levels of your urine. So the pH levels detected in urine are not likely to offer a reliable gender prediction.

If you view any of the YouTube videos of people trying this tale out, you probably see it only it resulting in a purple, girl result. We are yet to see a boy result?

Although the technology behind them isn’t published, it is possible that testing pH levels in the urine is the way at home gender tests such as IntelliGender and GENDERmaker work. It is possible to predict the gender of your baby from your urine, but the pH levels don’t determine it. It would need to be checked in a lab by companies such as easy-DNA.
