This old wives tale is related to the color of your nipples, or any nipple colour change in pregnancy. The tale goes that if your nipples or areola darken or become brown during your pregnancy then you will be having a boy. If your nipple color remains unchanged, the old wives tales states it’s a girl.

This one might originate with an element of truth. Nipple color can change during pregnancy, but certainly not for means of gender prediction.
A darkening to nipple color is one of the many changes that can happen to your breasts throughout pregnancy. One that is perfectly normal. It’s not fully understood what causes the areolas and nipples to pigment/darken. Since pregnancy induces surging hormones around your body, particularly true within your breasts, it maybe attributed to this. They are being prepared to nourish your baby and the production of milk. The nipples also secrete oils to help soften them in preparation for breast feeding.

Not all women will see a nipple colour change during pregnancy. It’s one of the multitude of things that could happen and is very unlikely to be a true predictor of your baby’s gender. In many ways, it’s fun to read these old wives tales, and perhaps something to quiz your guests with at your gender reveal party! I’d suggest sticking to gender reveal balloons however, instead of getting those nipples out.
We are not aware of any studies into this tale, but it’s unlikely to be a source of gender prediction. Although until Old Wives Tales are proven to be untrue, who knows! If you’re getting the same baby gender prediction from a number of old wives tales, there may be something in it.
