what is the chinese gender chart?
In short “It’s a chart that uses your age and your month of conception to predict the gender of your baby to be”
The Chinese Gender Chart was discovered in an ancient royal tomb, and said to date back more than 700 years. The chart/table is used to determine the gender of your baby and tell you if you will be having a baby boy or a girl.
Claims suggest it does so with over 90% accuracy. Quite a bold statement! At worst, it’s going to have a 50% chance of getting it right though hey?
You can use it to predict the gender of your baby or even plan for a future pregnancy if you have a specific baby gender in mind. Let’s be honest though, it’s probably to be used only for a bit of fun. Who knows, it’s worth a shot.
It’s quite straightforward to use the chart, but just before you go checking if you will be having a boy or a girl please continue reading.
how to use the chinese gender chart
To make sense of the Chinese Gender Chart, simply cross-references your age at the point of conception with the month in which your baby was conceived. The point where the 2 pieces of information converge on the chart is the prediction of your baby’s gender, a boy or girl.

however!
Just before you click through to view the chart and reveal what gender you are having, if you are a Western user there are 2 vital steps often overlooked which must be carried out first. If you want to read the Chinese Gender Chart accurately!
The key to success for Western users is:
Step 1: you need to convert your conception month to fit within the Chinese Lunar calendar
Step 2: you also need to convert your conception age to fit within the Chinese Lunar calendar
The truth is this part is a little tricky to get your brain around, so we’ll try and make it as easy as possible and talk you through step by step. We do hope in the near future to have an automatic converter tool on our site.
The Western World uses the Gregorian calendar, otherwise known as the Christian calendar or the Western calendar. The dates and months of the Western calendar differ slightly to the Chinese Lunar calendar which is used to determine dates such as Chinese New Year and for the Chinese Gender Chart of course. So in order to use your accurate information on the Chinese Gender Chart, you will first need to work out the ‘Chinese Lunar Month’ in which you conceived and secondly work out your ‘Chinese Lunar Age’ at the time of conception.
Once your Chinese Lunar calendar conception month and age have been established, it’s a simple task using the chart to determine the gender of your baby.
What is the Chinese Lunar Calendar and how do I calculate the Chinese Lunar month I conceived?
The Chinese calendar combines elements from both the ‘lunar calendar’ (which is based on the phase of the lunar cycle) and the ‘solar calendar’ (which is relative to Earth’s position as it’s revolving around the Sun).
Nowadays, most of Eastern Asia also uses the Gregorian calendar along with the Western world. Although the Chinese Lunar calendar is still used to determine religious holidays, such as Chinese New Year.
Lets get converting!
step 1
Lets work out Your Chinese Lunar Calendar conception month
Gregorian to Lunar conversion
There are many sources out there with published information showing the Gregorian to Lunar conversion. The easiest to navigate we’ve found is on the government of Hong Kong website.
Follow these steps to convert your conception month to fit within the Chinese Lunar calendar
Firstly, what date did you conceive? If you are not sure of this please read here for assistance. For our example we are going to use a conception date of July 20th 2021.
- Knowing your conception date, visit the Hong Kong Government website here
- On the opened webpage, click on the year of your conception. For our example 2021, this will open a conversion chart
- In the left (yellow) column find your month of conception, for our example July. On the top (yellow) row find your date of conception, for our example 20th
- As you will see for our example, this translates and the table shows our conception month as the 11th day of the 6th Lunar month (June)
So our Chinese Lunar Calendar conception month is June
Phew, still with us? 🙂
step 2
Next lets work out Your Chinese Lunar Calendar age at the time of conception.
This is generally quite straightforward. When calculating age, the Chinese include the time spent within the womb, so an additional year needs to be added to your Western age.
What was your age when you conceived? For our example we are going to use a conception age of 31, adding the additional year (for time spent in the womb) makes our Chinese Lunar Age 32.
but!
As we are using the Chinese Lunar Calendar we need to factor in when Chinese New Year was in the year of your birth. In the year of your birth, if your birthday falls before the Chinese New Year date you need to add an additional year to your age. So a total of 2 additional years including the time spent in the womb as above.
The easiest way to understand this is to follow our example:
Western age at the time of conception, 31 date of birth, January 16th 1990
Following the link to the Hong Kong Government website again and clicking on the year of our birth (1990) you will see that January 16th falls before the date of Chinese New Year (1st day of the 1st Lunar Month). So in this example we would need to add 2 years to our Western age to establish our Chinese Lunar age.
So our Chinese Lunar Calendar age is 33
lets find out if its a boy or girl?
Here is the Chinese Gender Chart!
If we use our example from earlier we determined
Chinese Lunar month of conception June
Chinese Lunar age at conception 33
Looking at the chart, we’re having a Girl!
It took a bit of work getting there translating our Western dates to fit within the Chinese Lunar Calendar but with a claimed accuracy of 90% its been worth it! How about you, does the Chinese Gender Chart reveal you are having a Boy or Girl?
